Chapter XV
A MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE
Anna looked about her admiringly. The gardens were
tidy and geometric, each avenue with a different purpose:
flowers for cutting, herbs, brightly colored vegetables. ’
‘But what a perfectly famous adventure. You have taken upon your shoulders the burden of her
misdeeds. The heavy weapon thundered
against the door; and it speedily yielded to their efforts. "
So Ruth heard about the poets; she became tolerably familiar with the exploits of
that engaging ruffian Cellini; she heard of the pathetic deafness of Beethoven;
she was thrilled, saddened, exhilarated; and on the evening of the twelfth day she
made bold to enter the talk. So absorbed was she by her
passionate supplications that she was insensible to anything passing around her,
until she felt a touch upon her shoulder, and heard a well-known voice breathe in
her ear—"Mother!"
She started at the sound as if an apparition had called her, screamed, and fell into
her son's outstretched arms. "Before you go, bring me the bottle of pineapple rum I opened yesterday. Anna stared back at every one with undaunted
composure. ‘But it is not on the horse at all, Jacques. He did not know—and probably never would unless
she told him—that it was very easy (and comfortable for a woman) to fall into
slatternly ways in this latitude. ’
She was backing across the room, moving towards the screen. ‘Word has it that she is
English on her father’s side. "
"I could make a fine sketch of him now," whispered Hogarth to Gay.
